Learning how to scrapbook..advice?
Im learning how to scrapbook...I love it...I don't have alot of tools but can someone give me a list of what I would need to have on hand at all times? I know its costly to do..but I think i'd be ok once I got all the tools I needed...

Everyone has wonderful suggestions and ideas. I never thought of the GW for old fabric--excellent!
I'm here to say that when I started, I was sOOooo excited that I went to the store and bought what I just knew I had to have--I haven't used most of that stuff & that was over 7 years ago. It's very good that you asked. Here's my list of basic tools of the trade that you must have:
* Scissors (recommend Cutterbee or similar)--these should be sharp right to the point
* Trimmer (recommend Cutterpede or other rotary blade trimmer)--look for one that will accommodate any size paper up to 12x12. This way, you only need one trimmer. Also, consider the type of trimmer. I've used all of them, and I like best the rotary type. This is because the blade rolls across the cutting surface rather than "running into it" like a knife trimmer (which can cause rought cuts as the blade becomes dull). Guillotine blades (with the blade that lifts up--like we used in school) are handy, too.
* Album (recommend post-bound, top loading)--get the best you can afford. There are many different styles. I have both strap-hinge and post-bound (with top loading pages). While I have used both, I prefer the top loading pages, because I find it easier to load the layouts into the protectors (no need to slip a sleeve over things); in addition, if you have to move layouts around (forgot to put something in), you can just pull the layouts out and move them without having to take the book apart. For strength during page turning, I also recommend and prefer the post-bound. They expand to about 3-4 inches (20-25 pages), and the layouts will get heavy; the post-bound binding gives support to the pages along the length of the bound side (less occurance of page sag).
* Adhesive (recommend a tab dispenser & mini glue dots to start). There are many different styles of runners-use what fits your hand the best. Mini-glue dots are perfect for adhering buttons, fibers, ribbons, and other things.
* Journaling Pen (look for the "AP" in a circle denoting Art & Creative Materials Institute certification)
* Kits -- layout kits are perfect for starting, especially if they are coordinated. You can add patterned paper as you go to match.
* Layout Blueprints--this is a great book by Amy Elkins. I have tons of idea books, but I like this one the best. The layout ideas are laid out like blueprints, and the samples are from all over the country. They can be adapted to any occasion.
This list is what I always suggest as a starting point. The last item is one I've just added, because I love using it--it also fits into my crop tote. Oh, put a crop tote on the list, too, but here's a suggestion: Get a tote that will hold your album, kits, and basic tools in the center (bigger than 12x12) with pockets to hold your scissors and adhesive. When you pack to crop, get together your kits and photos that you want to work on, pull together the embellishments that you'll use, and put these items in your tote. I used to take all of my stuff--but I only worked on a few things. So now, I only take what I know I can reasonably complete and then pack from there. It only takes me one trip to unload at a crop--it's great!
The other most important thing (saved the best for last)--anything you put in your albums must be acid/lignin free and archival safe. If you're not sure, but still want to have it in the album, enclose it in a section of page protector or envelope.
Photo safe and archival quality are not equal--photo safe will last for many years before it starts to degrade (like 10-15); archival safe means it will not begin to degrade for many decades. For details about this, check out the Wilhelm Imaging Research Institute--great stuff here (link is below).
