A Closer Look At The Famous Slinky

Since the beginning of the age of factories, we have made use of springs to do jobs that were critical but rather unexciting. In the middle of World War II, fortunately, a mechanical engineer working at a Philadelphia shipyard witnessed a spring behaving in a very peculiar way. Due to this, he realized that maybe springs could be fun – and profitable. Another nice option is the Fur Real Biscuit My Lovin Pup.

That mechanical engineer went by the name of Richard James, and he noticed spring get knocked from a shelf and end up on the floor. The thing that caught his attention was the means by which the spring, instead of just falling on the floor,  “stepped” in a sequence of arcs from a shelf, to a stack of books, onto a tabletop, and after that to the floor, where it gathered itself and stood upright.

Influenced by this exceptionally animated spring, James ran tests with various kinds of steel and numerous tensions, and ultimately made a spring that would “walk” down an incline. James’ wife Betty dubbed the new toy Slinky after looking the word up in a dictionary and figuring out that it was an excellent description.

In 1945, the James’ were offered authorization to put an inclined plane in the toy section of Gimbles’ department store in Philadelphia. Immediately after a couple of demonstrations, the consumers were evidently pleased, and James sold his entire supply of 400 Slinkies in about an hour and a half. Those first Slinkies were priced at $1, and the price has not increased significantly in about half a century. Apparently, Betty James insisted on this, since she was determined that lower income parents should be able to have the funds for this toy as well as richer ones. Another good alternative to look into is the Fur Real Biscuit My Lovin Pup.

Slinky continued to be a well-known toy for more than three generations, and has sold well beyond 30 million units within that time. Its usages have not been restricted to playrooms, by the way. Science educators have used Slinkies to demonstrate the attributes of waves in a visible manner. Soldiers often employed them all through the Vietnam War to replace broken radio antennas, and NASA has used them for zero-gravity physical science experiments in the space shuttle. In 2003, the Toy Industry Association accepted the Slinky to its “Century of Toys List”. Funny enough, the Slinky happens to be such a cultural treasure that the US Postal Service released a Slinky postage stamp in 1999.

In spite of its many honours and achievements, the Slinky continues to be reasonably priced and widely available. Today's Slinky is presently made from metal and also plastic, and both versions can be found in basically any toy store and most big box stores and also online for not quite $6. Another great model to consider is the Fur Real Biscuit My Lovin Pup.
