Flower Chain Learning
Why not do something fun with your kids that is also educational? As a bonus, this same project can be used to create wonderful memories of time you spent binding their heart to your own.
Making chains and garlands of flowers can accomplish this and more. If you have a son, tell him you are teaching him an important skill so that he can make his wife feel pretty one day. Your daughter will feel much like a princess with a wreath of flowers on her head.
For this project, you will need flowers with sturdy stems. Tithonia, zinnias, red clover, marigolds, glove amaranth, dandelions, daisies, chrysanthemum, black-eyed Susan, bachelor buttons and asters are some of the flowers that are well suited to this project.
Pick 25-30 flowers for this project, and practice counting with your child. Take the pile of flowers and help your child sort them into equal piles. Another alternative is to sort them by colors or sizes. Repetition is the key to learning these skills.
This project also presents an opportunity to learn plant identification. Do you know which plants are good to eat? What other ways can the plant be used? Can you name the parts of the flower? Where are the pistil (made up of the stigma, style and ovary) and the stamen? What are their functions? You get the idea.
Plucking a flower firmly but gently exercises fine motor skills. By reaching for the swaying flower blooms, a child develops hand eye coordination.
Find a cozy spot to sit with your child and demonstrate how to cut a slit just below the flower’s head using your thumb nail. Place the stem of a second flower through this hole. Create another opening in the stem of this new flower, just beneath the bloom. Encourage your child to help you place a new stem through the hole you created in the second stem. This builds fine motor skills.
Continue threading stems until you have a chain that is the right length for your decoration. On the last stem, create an opening large enough to slide the first flower through. After you knot the last stem, you can then either trim the extra stems or braid them into your wreath.
Place the finished wreath upon your head or upon your child’s head and exclaim, “Won’t Daddy be so proud!”
When someone asks your child what you did that day, they might hear about how you taught them to wear flowers, make bracelets, or that you just sat outside and had fun. You will know that you just used one outing to cover several subjects: sorting, color identification, counting botany and learning how to finish a detailed project. In addition to these benefits, you child will also hear the stories you share with him while gaining an appreciation for God’s creation.
