Inking with those little, inexpensive Colorbox inks

Inking  -- What can you do with those little, inexpensive Colorbox inks?

One really quick, easy and inexpensive way to give any piece a new look is by inking. You can ink almost any paper, and all you need is an inkpad!

You can ink just the edge of a paper, or the entire paper.

To ink the edge of a paper, rub an inkpad along the outside frame of the paper. There isn’t really a right or wrong way to do this, but different techniques will yield different results. You can slide the ink pad around the paper to get a fine, border-like look. Or, you can rub the inkpad from the front side of the paper to the back, moving your way around the entire paper. This method will yield more of the ink onto the surface of your paper, giving it more of a distressed look.

The most popular colors for inking tend to be browns and blacks, since they do create a distressed, antique look. To create more of an antique look, you can in more of the paper by rubbing the inkpad on the paper – further away from the edges as well. Be sure to start slowly as you can always add more later.  (CONTINUED BELOW)

In addition to inking background papers and frames, consider inking die cuts. Inking can turn a simple die cut into an interesting detailed embellishment. You can take it a step further and add other items to your die cut, such as brads, ribbons or another paint element (such as stickles or smooch).

Another thing to consider is to apply inking after tearing paper. This truly gives the piece an antique look.

The small Colorbox Cat’s Eye inks tend to be popular for inking, perhaps because they’re inexpensive and their small size makes them easy to use. There is also a stylus that the Cat’s Eye inks fit onto that makes it easier to ink with. The ink pad simply snaps onto the stylus and is easier to hold and lessens the chances of the ink slipping or falling.

Once you’re comfortable with inking (and it doesn’t take long to master this technique!), consider applying the same technique using other mediums such as acrylic paint, chalks and more. Adirondack makes acrylic paint in dabbers that can be used for inking. The dabbers are tubes of acrylic paint and the paint comes out by dabbing on the sponge-like tip. (Dabbers are also great for painting paper and chipboards. Chalks can be applied to the edges of papers using a stylus. The possibilities are endless, and the results are amazing!
