A boon to both do-it-yourself and professional decorators, ready made curtains provide an easy, effective way to choose window dressings for any room in a home. A vast selection of draperies, valances and accessories are available in a variety of colors, styles, sizes and fabrics to fit almost any type of window and budget.
Draperies are characterized by type and style. Types include café, tiered, lined, insulated, pleated, ruffled, sheers, tabbed and tailored. Styles are often categorized as traditional, formal, contemporary or country. In addition, special types of off-the-shelf draperies are designed to fit unusual windows such as bays, French windows, sliding glass doors, patio windows and those of an unusual height or width.
Standard lengths and widths are available for each type to fit typical window measurements. Widths vary according to type, but usually start between 42 and 46 inches. Length depends on the type and style. Not all styles are made in all widths and lengths, so it is important to make sure that the style selected includes a size that will cover the window. Full-length draperies come in standard as well as extra-long lengths to accommodate tall windows, to allow installation higher above the window, or to "puddle" on the floor.
When selecting a size, it is important to know window measurements. Curtain width should be one and one-half to two times the width of the window for proper fullness. Ready made sheer curtains should be two to three times the width of the window. Lace panels require less fullness so that the design shows. Length is a matter of taste, and can be adjusted by raising or lowering the rod or pole. To measure for length, begin 6 inches above the window. Standard lengths include the curtain rod pocket.
Various types of valances including balloons, festoons and jabots are made in fabric and patterns to match tiered and full-length panels and sets. Matching accessories include tie-backs, cords and tassels to complete the look. Thus, an entire window assemblage can be purchased and installed efficiently.
Sources for purchase include department stores, home furnishing shops, mega-stores, specialty shops and on-line retailers. While some merchants feature only their own brands, others offer a selection of name-brands or designer brands. Many feature cloth from particular mills or weavers.
Many draperies come in easy-care fabrics such as machine-washable polyester, cotton and cotton blends. These fabrics work well in kitchens, bathrooms and casual rooms such as dens or children's rooms. For living or dining rooms, a more traditional look may be desired. Velvet, linen or silk ready made curtains blend well with a more formal look.
